Workshop “Performance practice on historical double-action harps” – Giuliano Marco Mattioli

The workshop aims to provide an in-depth exploration of historically informed performance practice for historical double-movement harps (1810-1950). The primary goal is to offer participants a critical and analytical perspective on how to understand and interpret the scores written for this instrument, enabling them to perform on both historical and modern harps.

The evolution of double-movement harps and the technical changes in pedal harps after the 1810 patent will be discussed. Participants will gain fundamental knowledge on how to apply historically informed performance practice, including which musical instruments to use, how to approach studying a piece, and which musical editions are most suitable. Numerous methods published for the double-movement harp will be compared, examining how to interpret musical signs, perform embellishments and arpeggiated chords, use different fingerings, and follow indications related to interpretation and musical taste.

Finally, the acquired knowledge will be showed through the performance of the participants’ repertoire, or through sight-reading of small pieces and extracts from the methods.

Participation registration required

To participate in the workshop a form is needed to be filled. Registration will be opened from 10th of March 2025.
