Chube was set up by Ben Creighton Griffiths (Harp, Keys) and Matt Williams (Drums, Engineering) in 2015. They wrote their first tracks in 2016 before being joined by Aeddan Williams on bass for the recording of their first EP in summer 2017, before releasing it at an exclusive launch show at Tiny Rebel Cardiff in 2018. Since then the project has gone from strength to strength. After the Covid pandemic Ben was joined by Ashley John Long on bass and Jon Bradford Jones on drums, whilst Matt remains with the group as a producer and engineer.

Chube has performed at a number of festivals including Harp on Wight, Aberjazz, and Wall2Wall Jazz Festivals – giving a unique recital with special guest Dennis Rollins MBE on the trombone at the latter. They have also performed at music venues around the country including Pizza Express Jazz Club Soho, Tiny Rebel Cardiff, Black Mountain Jazz Club, Gwdihw Cardiff, Matt & Phreds Jazz Club Manchester, OCC Malvern, The Fleece Bristol, and the Bridport Arts Centre.

Tracks by Chube, including their remix collaboration with BESPA, have been played on BBC Radio Wales Introducing with Adam Walton, BBC Radio 3 Jazz Now, BBC Cymru with Lisa Gwilym, and radio Cardiff multiple times. In 2019 Chube was a finalist for the Peter Whittingham Jazz Award. Chube released their second EP in August 2023, breaking new ground, garnering positive reviews, and developing their sound and blend of styles even further.

Benjamin Creighton Griffiths is an Internationally touring jazz and classical harpist based in Wales. Originally classically trained he now specialises in jazz both as a soloist and with his bands – the Transatlantic Hot Club and Chube. His career has taken him across the world including to Canada, the Caribbean, Hong Kong, India, Brazil, and across Europe and has seen him collaborate with excellent musicians in both the classical and jazz world. As well as a performer he is a composer, most recently developing a concert schedule for his own Concerto for Jazz Harp & Symphony Orchestra.

Ashley John Long

DOUBLE BASS

Ashley John Long is an award-winning virtuoso double bassist and composer active in a diverse range of musical idioms including jazz and improvisation, early and contemporary chamber music, and as a soloist. He has performed and recorded internationally with some of the UK’s leading Jazz musicians, as well as accompanying visiting international artists, whilst his work as a soloist has seen the premiers of numerous new works for solo bass.

As a composer, Ash has carved a reputation as a creator of innovative scores that balance fine detail with freedom and flexibility whilst retaining a strong melodic sense. 2018-2019 saw him participating in the London Philharmonic Orchestra’s young composers scheme which culminated in the orchestral work Lunea (2019). He studied at RWCMD (BMus) and Cardiff University (PhD) where he undertook research into contemporary performance practice and composition where he also lectures in musicology, performance, and composition.

HARP

Benjamin Creighton Griffiths is an Internationally touring jazz and classical harpist based in Wales. He made his International debut at the 2004 1er Concours International de Harpe in Nantes, France where, aged 7, he came second in the Under 18 division. In 2006 he won the Under 13 Division of the Wales International Harp Festival before going on to win the 2008 Junior Lily Laskine competition in Paris, winning a concert harp in the process.

Originally classically trained he now specialises in jazz both as a soloist and with his bands – the Transatlantic Hot Club and Chube. His career has taken him across the world including to the USA, Canada, the Caribbean, Hong Kong, India, Brazil, and the breadth of Europe and has seen him collaborate with great musicians and ensembles in both the classical and jazz world. As well as a performer he is a composer, most recently developing a concert schedule for his own Concerto for Jazz Harp & Symphony Orchestra.

Upcoming appearances a Transatlantic Hot Club UK Tour and the Welsh premiere of his Concerto with the Cardiff Philharmonic at the BBC Hoddinott Hall.

Jon Bradford-Jones

DRUMS

Jon Bradford-Jones is a Professional Drummer/Percussionist based out of South Wales, United Kingdom. He started playing Drums as a child and decided to study music as a profession as soon as he left high school. Jon studied A level music and performing arts at College Gwent, Crosskeys and then went on to study Jazz at The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama where he graduated in 2008. Alongside studying, he also performed with varying bands, ensembles and artists and in 2009 moved to London to pursue a career as a freelance session drummer where he performed in some of the city’s leading Jazz venues while also covering varying deputy roles on some of London’s leading west end shows. For the last decade Jon has been busy doing studio sessions alongside regularly performing in Theatre shows and small jazz ensembles around the world, his latest show being Drummer/Percussionist for the hit Broadway production of Burn The Floor.
